Walking in a winter Wonderland!

December 2014 - festive times ahoy!

Life is becoming more and more 'normal'...well whatever that means. My need to write is diminishing, so time to start finding that rabbit hole to walk out of. There's only one relatively big piece of medical news (I'm BA Baracas (BRCA) positive) in December of which I will write about in a separate post so as to not quash any festive cheer!

Photo no.787 - my Monica Galetti look!

Hair growth seems to be a slow burn. Whilst I'm thankful for it growing back, it has shaken up how I feel about my identity. I'm confused as to what I look like...really I want 'my hair' back, as in how it was before the chemicals stripped me of it. It's the legacy of treatment that will take its time.

Photo no.788 - the wreath makers...

Last year Kim and I went on a wreath making course, so when we found out it was happening again this year we had to do it! This year the price had nearly doubled and there was less direction but nonetheless it filled us with festive cheer! Plus we left with fabulous wreaths for our doors!

Photo no.789 - happy wreath maker!

It seems that trees have been popping up in people's homes since the first of December. Something to beat away the November blues. As we were at a garden centre for the wreath making it seemed wise to pick up a tree to get our home into the festive spirit!

Photo no.790 - the tree man!

We mix Swedish and English traditions in our home. The Swedes decorate their homes from 1st December but the tree goes up relatively late. So we decorate from the first but get the tree earlier to enjoy the extend the festivities! From memory the Swedes keep the tree up until 13th January, so we tend to do this as well!

Photo no.791 - Christmas dinner...the trial run: Venison with a red wine sauce, dauphinoise potatoes and tenderstem broccoli

You'll have seen from my Sunday night suppers that I'm not a roast fan, so a traditional Christmas dinner of turkey etc is not for us. This year I'd decided that we would have venison. I had cooked this for Christmas dinner a couple of years ago, accompanied by a blueberry sauce. However, I wanted to see how a red wine sauce would pair with the venison. The verdict...it was good but there's something about the fruitiness from the blueberries that goes so well with the venison. So blueberry sauce it is!

Photo no.792 - D&VW tree 2014

For all the elf fans out there, this is simply the best Christmas card...thanks Lisa P!It will forever remind me of Pedro Alves. : )

Photo no.793 - I do! : )

Nothing beats the festive season in London...here are a few highlights.

Photo no.794 - A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

Photo no.795 - Cartier all wrapped up!

Photo no.796 - Bond Street's new peacock lights

Photo no.797 - Burlington Arcade...quintessentially British

For those of you less familiar with London, the Burlington Arcade is an absolute must. Walking down it takes you back in time. It's one of the most romantic spots, especially for us as this is where DW and I went engagement ring shopping. : )

Photo no.798 - no question!

Photo no.799 - 'drink me'

Writing this festive post, it has made me realise how many traditions that DW and I embrace each year. The first is attending the Lucia concert at the Swedish church. DW always calls this Swedish Diwali as it is a celebration of light being brought on the darkest day of the year.

Here's more info if you're interested:

Photo no.800 - the Swedish church in London

Photo no.801 - the programme!

Photo no.802 - Lucia!

After the choir have processed in to the traditional Lucia song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk0FyZqNp5Q) they sing other festive and Lucia songs. It's absolutely beautiful and definitely kicks off the festive season for us!

Photo no.803 - candlelit celebration!

Photo no.804 - a candle headress

I always admire the Lucia who walks in with a crown of burring candles on her head...sure there is a hat made from flameproof material on her head...still it's a crown of burning candles!!!

Photo no.805 - Lucia leaves the building!

A truly beautiful service, though this year's there was a bit of distraction from the boys in front of us...so much so that I turned into the old woman that taps people on the shoulder...having said that it took most of the concert for me to muster up the courage to do it, not knowing the reaction!!! Thankfully it was one of shock and stillness so I should have done it earlier! Grumpy old woman, me? No!!! ; )

After the service glögg (Swedish mulled wine), lussebullar (saffron buns) and coffee (rocket fuel - Ben Smith!!!) are served. Last year DW made his own lussebullar but sadly this year the Swedish chef has not been in action so this was our one and only lussebullar!

To wrap off this Scandi evening, we went for dinner at Lisa's in Portobello and found ourselves in the midst of a Swedish christmas party complete with plenty of schnapps! A great atmosphere complete with an impromptu jazz session.

Photo no.806 - : )

Photo no.807  - a medley of traditional Swedish starters - gravadlax, herrings and toast skagen.

Photo no.808 - Pytt i panna - aka Swedish bubble & squeak!

This dish is not for me but it did make one Swede very happy!

Photo no.809 - one man and his hash!

Photo no.810 - candlelit dining...

Photo no.811  - walking in a winter wonderland

For whatever reason our Sunday walks seem to have diminished over the past few weeks. Rather than river walking we decided to walk in the woods above Hambleden village. When the sun is shining it's absolutely spectacular here....

Photo no.812 - simply stunning

Photo no.813 - the valley

The next festive tradition is to see the Nutcracker. There is always something so magical as the strings come in for the overture. Last year we saw it at the Royal Opera House, which was an incredible experience as I've always wanted to go there. Alas this year we were back at the trusty Coliseum for ENB's interpretation...still a brilliant production and the Coliseum is one of the great London theatres. One day we'll be in one of the boxes (me following the musical score - I saw this in an opera house in Vienna and is on my hot list) but for this evening's performance we were way up high in the balcony!

Photo no.814 - showtime!

Photo no.815 - the infamous dome

A truly magical Christmas evening...though DW was upset with the production being different as this version missed out some of his favourite bits...the icicles jumping out of the giant sized fridge and the grandfather's comical dance. Still you can't have everything!

Photo no.816 - more London lights...Regent Street

The Regent Street lights seem to one of the more controversial, if Christmas lights can ever be classified as controversial (!). Despite each year being sponsored by a Disney movie the overall effect is classic and enchanting. Not my favourite but one of the best!

Photo no.817 - the wreath in situ on a sunny winter's day

Photo no.818 - tree by day!

Yep, that's a Christmas monkey at the top of the tree. DW and I bought this on our first trip to New York, in fact the monkey's from Philadelphia as we took a daytrip there. He's a jolly fellow so deserves his place at the top of the tree!

The next festive tradition is singalong carols at the Albert Hall with Felicity and Neil. This year the boys declared that we had to go to the adult/ more refined performance in the evening...for DW this was to hear Zadok the Priest and for Neil he was hoping for an enchanting version of O Come Emmanuel (Enya style!)....Dinner is always a bit rushed before evening performances so we decided to take an afternoon tea...one that I've wanted to try for ages...The Mad Hatter's Afternoon Tea..apt for this blogger!

Photo no.819 - Four house blends to choose from...Strawberries & Cream, Rhubarb & Custard, Mint choc chip and Apple Pie

Photo no.820 - 'off with its head'!

When it comes to afternoon tea, there is generally only one tea for me and that's a traditional black leaf tea...assam, ceylon or English Breakfast...so with an eyebrow raised I opted to go for the boring option!

Photo no.821 - sandwich selection

In truth there are two or three things that are the reasons for enjoying an afternoon tea...scones, cakes and the tea itself...however I found myself liking the sandwich course the best...curiouser and curiouser!

Photo no.822 - the cake stand

It's fair to say that this afternoon tea is more style than substance. The cake course was a bit disappointing as most of them were some form of mousse or cream. The scones were good and it was nice to have a savoury scone option and this little bottle was quite interesting....

Photo no.823 - 'drink me'

This tiny bottle was split into three flavours...the first sip an explosively vibrant passionfruit shot, followed by a creamy coconut layered and finished off with banana puree..bizarre but strangely good.

Photo no.824 - tick tock victoria sponge...this was the best cake!

Photo no.825 - no Mad Hatter's tea is complete without a riddle...

Photo no.826 - of course for those who like eggs!

The verdict...company aside (which was excellent!), this tea was really disappointing and the service was diabolical. We waited 40 minutes to get our tea and then had to practically nail them down to get the bill and pay...the result with it being the weekend before Christmas and the traffic volume being high, we arrived a couple of minutes late to the Albert Hall. We had to wait in the wings before we were allowed in, which meant that DW missed the full force of Zadok....grrr!!! Still it's a festive time so no time to be cross!

Photo no.827 - Christmas carollers!

It's absolutely incredible to be in the Albert Hall when it's full of Christmas cheer and love. We always get the cheap seats at the top as it really doesn't matter where you sit, so a must for you all next Christmas!

The unthinkable happened on December 14th...we had a Sunday dinner out...the reason was a birthday celebration for the ever wonderful Luca Achilli! However, with the festive finale week approaching this Sunday a light fish supper was required...it's a repeat but one of my favourites...

Photo no.828 - Ching's dofu haddock, spring cabbage stir fry and brown rice

Having been up and down the M4 quite a few times this festive season, this always makes me smile!

Photo no.829 - can you spot santa?!

December 23rd...time for another light supper before the Christmas dinners begin!

Photo no.830 - A mash up! Jamie's Asian style salmon with the noodles from the Chicken Satay 30 minute meal!

And so it came around...December 24th! This Christmas chef has been preparing food shopping lists, ordering meat, planning accompanying drinks for the past couple of weeks so finally it was showtime! First job...pick up the meat from the butcher! For the Swedish Christmas dinner I planned to make Nigella's Cola ham. I had ordered 2kg, which was far more than I needed for 4 people. Walking out of the butcher I felt that the bag I was carrying was a lot heavier than 2kg...mmn this could be interesting. Interesting indeed...I didn't have a pan big enough to fit the meat into...PANIC!!! : )) The plan was to pick DW up from work so in theory there was time to find a pan in London, get back and cook this beast in order to eat at a reasonable time...Thankfully knowing that the meat just squeezed into a 6.5l stock pot gave a benchmark in terms of the pan size required...we settled on a jam pan and our wok lid provided the shelter needed to cover the pan...the only downside was that it needed 5 hours of bubbling away in cola...

Photo no.831 - frothing away!

Despite not being allowed in the kitchen for most of the year, it turns out that nurse Lars is the resident glögg maker in the Welinder household...this year he made it from scratch and it was not half bad!

Photo no.832 - nurse Lars' intoxicating glögg!

With the ham bubbling merrily away in cola, a perfect nap opportunity was presented with Toy Story 3 on in the background...big baby is still so freakily scary!!!

The clock struck 8 and it was time to kick off some eating at least! The traditional Swedish Christmas dinner is a smörgåsbord (Julbord) kicking off with a fish course consisting of different varieties of marinated herrings, gravadlax and a few others depending on the size of your bord! This is then followed by various meats, meatballs (of course!), ham, salami, ribs etc. Accompanying all of this is potatoes, cheese and different breads. I much prefer it to the British dinner but to enjoy it fully it's best to go to a restaurant. So here's our paired back version. Kicking off with the herrings!

Photo no.833 - two herring varieties, västerbottensost (cheese), hard boiled eggs (for the egg lovers out there) and some knäckerbrod (crisp bread)

Photo no.834 - traditional drinks...beer and schnapps!

Photo no.835 - en riktig god jul!

The contents of the bottle above are not for the faint hearted...it's 40% proof and the idea is to drink many glasses of this liquid throughout the dinner. Originally it was to kill any bacteria that might be in the food but now it's more for enjoyment. There are many different varieties of Aquavit but I've yet to find one that is even remotely tolerable to drink...DW on the other hand loves the stuff! If you're after a strongly medicinal flavoured  vodka then this is the drink for you!!!

Nurse Lars' other festive culinary quest is homemade mustard. This is a really lovely tradition that happens every Christmas eve. As you know I'm not a mustard fan but this ceremony of mustard making is a Chrstmas eve must! It's made by grinding mustard seeds, cream, sugar and water together in a large bowl with a cannonball being swirled around to mix all the elements.

Photo no.836 - intense concentration!

Photo no.837 - the inside of the mustard making bowl!

Photo no.838 - DW in flexing his mustard muscles...hula! ; )

Back to the gammon saga....so after 5 hours of bubbling away it was time to glaze the top and give it a quick final blast in the oven...

Photo no.839 - studded with cloves prior to the glaze of treacle, mustard and sugar being applied

Photo no.840 - the pig de résistance!!!

Was it worth the wait? Well by 10pm I think we would have thought anything would have tasted wonderful but it was pretty darn great! Served with some slaw and potatoes it was good.

The traditional Swedish Christmas pudding is rice pudding. None of us are fans, so I decided to bake some apples...

Photo no.841 - apples stuffed with apple brandy soaked sultanas, cinnamon, honey and butter

Photo no.842 - the result...

Hugh advised using any eating apple and baking them for an hour...next time I'll be using a  cooking apple as after an hour these were still pretty hard...still the flavour was hard to beat!

God jul!!!

As dinner was fairly late, it was late to bed for us. Still no need to rush up in the morning...At 9am DW's phone rang and it was Luca calling from Italy asking if we could drive to Putney to turn off their burglar alarm as it had been ringing since 4am and the neighbours were less than happy. All of the local key holders were away so we were the closest...a trip to Putney...merry Christmas DW! He was pretty happy...no really he was!!! Thankfully we arrived and everything was fine. We think it was a pesky helium balloon that was slowly deflating and hence moving that had triggered the alarm. Who knows! A bit of an adventure.

The sun was shining so we took the opportunity for a short walk along the river at Barnes. So beautiful!

Photo no.843 - Merry Christmas from D&VW!

Photo no.844 - something to keep me warm!

Photo no.845 - DW's favourite gift...an I love Maidenhead coaster from the Regans!

Ding, ding! Christmas dinner round 2...

Photo no.846 - the table is set!

Photo no.847 - Christmas hair!

So the hair goal was to have hair as long as DW's by Christmas...this was pretty much achieved, largely thanks to him having a pre Christmas hair cut!  Still someway to go to get my lovely locks back but they're coming....

Photo no.848 - to kick off...toast skagen

Or as my brother affectionately calls it...Daniel's Swedish prawns, as this is DW's signature dish. It's a classic Swedish starter and everyone loves it...the caviar is optional but it adds a salty layer to the flavour which works well against the zestiness from the lemon! Nice!

Photo no.849 - chestnuts roasting on an open fire....well no chestnuts but there is an open fire!

There's something so captivating about an open fire, especially when it's dark and cold. Time to light the BBQ for the main course...

Photo no.850 - FIRE!!!

This is our third year of hosting Christmas day dinner and every time we've barbecued. It makes life so much easier for the chef! Plus it keeps the boys occupied!

Photo no.851 - the Christmas candle...

This is an absolute Swedish must during advent to light a candle each week leading up to Christmas. In the UK this is only done in church but there's something romantic about lighting a candle each week in the run up to the main event.

Photo no.852 - bubbling blueberry sauce!

A couple of years ago Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall had a series about focussing on 3 key ingredients...Three Good Things. This recipe for venison with blueberry sauce featured in the series but much to my disappointment not in the book...still that's where the internet comes in handy!

Photo no.853 - BBQ Venison fillet with blueberry sauce, dauphinoise potatoes and some sugarsnap peas for some crunch!

One word. Yum!!! : )

Photo no.854 - two happy revellers!

Photo no.855 - Merry Christmas from me to you! xxx

Photo no.856 - And a merry Christmas to the one I love the most! xxx

Photo no.857 - flaming well time for pudding!

A truly great Christmas...though next year you'll find me in a hotel! ; ))

Photo no.858 - a minion merry christmas!

The thing I really love about Christmas is the fun festive times that are had in the run up. The carol services (I even brushed the dust off from my flute and played in one), the infectious festive cheer and Kim spreading Christmas joy at every given opportunity (I suspect there is some elf blood somewhere!!!). The main event in this instance is never really the best bit, still it's a tradition that is there to be enjoyed! In our case twice! : )

Time to work off some of the dinners in a post Christmas walk along the Thames...

Photo no.859 - the moon shining brightly...

One thing I've really learnt to appreciate this year is the small things...

Photo no.860 - DW noticing the moon reflection in the river following us (it's the small white dot in case you're wondering!)

So the final Sunday night supper of 2014...time to pull out a VW classic Sunday night dinner...

Photo no.861 - Fish on roasted fennel & tomatoes

A perfect dinner to cleanse the system after the richness of Christmas.

Back to real time and it's now New Year's Eve 2014, which got off to a pretty chilly start...I dropped DW off at the train station and decided to head down to the river to see the frosty winterland. It didn't disappoint!

Photo no.862 - a frosty, foggy winter's morning...serene and stunning

Photo no.863 - at -3.5 deg C, the river had frozen...you can see the ice formation, granted it's not the best pic!

Photo no.864 - an early morning river walker...complete with my Christmas hat! ; )

Photo no.865 - wonder web!

So here endeth the Wonderland warblings for 2014. Thanks for coming on the 2014 journey with me, it's certainly been a roller coaster ride with many highs and the odd low thrown in for good measure. I've learnt so much this year but my two key learnings are that you are all so much stronger than you can imagine and you are all loved more than you know...cherish these as you move into 2015. I know I will. Going back to to my lady Eleanor Roosevelt...this tea bag has certainly been dunked into many hot water scenarios this year but with a bit of internal strength, a dash of laughter and a bucket load of love we've made it. Here's to a very happy and healthful 2015!

Peace, love and joy to you all!

Much love. Over and out for 2014!

A brave new world...starting to leave Wonderland

Monday 17th November

Song of the day (LH): Waterloo sunset - The Kinks
Song of the day (VW): Stayin' alive - The Bee Gees

Ah ha ha ha stayin alive, stayin alive...!

Today I went to The Haven to meet one of the volunteers there to tell my story, as they'd like to make a case study of me for their website and possibly marketing material...hopefully it'll come out well!

Tuesday 18th November

Song of the day (LH): Bright side of the road - Van Morrison
Song of the day (VW): Awake - Electric Guest

I think the post treatment blues are starting to lift....I should be ecstatically happy to be free of treatment but for whatever reason it doesn't feel like this and I think this is true for many others. But I'm grateful for the positivity starting to flow once more....Just need to get rid of this stomach bug...ouch! Still good for the weight loss that's required as I'm not feeling too hungry...you know the cycle...you eat, it hurts, so much so that it puts you off eating for a while...listen to your body VW!

Wednesday 19th November

Song of the day (LH): Superheroes - The Script
Song of the day (VW): Something happened on the way to heaven - Phil Collins

A therapeutic walk with Rachel and Maddie and their friend Kerry...I was gate crashing them on a buggy friendly walk around the Thicket...given it had been quite rainy over the past few days the fields weren't so buggy friendly but the walk had some wonderful views and despite being freezing cold it was nice to be out in the sunshine. Vitamin D daily dose check and some time spent without my mind wandering off into various thoughts...good therapy!!!

Photo no.781 - the perfect package.....

Saturday night is end of treatment party night...unfortunately Lisa P can't make it but sent this very thoughtful parcel. Thanks so much Lisa P, it made my day!!! xxx

Thursday 20th November

Song of the day (LH): Say it right - Nelly Fertado
Song of the day (VW): Warwick Avenue - Duffy

Argh it's a 20th!!! : )) Sleepy, sleepy! London afternoon for me...first stop a great physio session with Kate then some time with the guys at Sola Kitchens to finalise the kitchen plans. I still think it's a slightly crazy project to be doing but it's important to DW, so who can say no?! As a treat we got burritos from Wholefoods for dinner, as I knew I was going to be too tired to cook when we got back...this has definitely become a guilty pleasure accompanied by a green juice to add in some health benefit!!! ; ) What today has shown me though, is that tiredness aside, my mental health is definitely much better off when I'm doing things/ seeing people so better start planning some daily activities to keep on the positivity train! Choo, choo!!!

Friday 21st November

Song of the day (LH): Two hearts - Phil Collins
Song of the day (VW): All woman - Lisa Stansfield

Today was a post treatment first....zumba!!! Whoop, whoop! Yep, my dancing shoes are back on and boy did it feel great! Annet threw in some of my favourite numbers and it turns out that it was due to having read some of my early blog posts. I was so touched when she told me...thank you so much, it was a great welcome back and gave me confidence to go for it! The endorphins were definitely flowing so more dancing required!

A productive afternoon...kitchen project stuff...check! Blog...check! Party playlist...check!

This evening we went over to my parent's house for a family dinner. My mum rustled up a great tagine! Next Friday, we're going to a 20s Chicago themed party. DW had been struggling to work out to wear but never fear my brother had a fancy dress outfit on hand...

Photo no.782 - what an outfit....odd job joins the mafia?!!! Sorry DW! xxx

Photo no.783 - gangsta Mum!

A lovely evening! Thanks Mummy, Daddy, Luke and Natalie! xxx

Saturday 22nd November

Song of the day (LH): Perfect Day - Lou Reed
Song of the day (VW): When doves cry - Prince

Today's song was chosen by my Dad after he showed me this picture by Noma Bar.

http://store.outline-editions.co.uk/Products/202-when-doves-cry.aspx

I love Noma Bar's work and we've got a few of his prints...it's always interesting to see what people can see first.

Party night! Wow! Can't believe it's finally here...fingers crossed people come!!! : /

DW and I had a cheeky pre party burger at Jackson & Rye and then just before 8pm headed over to the party venue...Kettner's courtesy of the wonderful music man Lee Homer! Thank you so, so much, it was a truly fabulous venue...such a shame you couldn't be there to listen to our playlist and have some bubbly!!!xxx

Slowly but surely people arrived and there were a few amazing surprises...I had thought that Kim wouldn't be able to make it but the angel that she is popped in between courses from Sian's hen do and then came back at the end...it really made my evening! Plus she looked amazing in red! : ) Then another arrival of someone who I thought wasn't going to make it...Debbie!!! Yay! A big thank you to everyone who came and made it such a special evening full of dancing, drinking, laughing...it was such a good night that I completely lost track of time and we soon realised that the last train wasn't going to happen...with the remaining party people we decided to head to Ronnie Scott's to catch the late show...but the queue and rain meant we all herded into Bar Italia...I've always wanted to go here so it was great to go in for a late night coffee...of course the Ray Gelato song was running through my head! : )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKIKoe_13QA

Photo no.784 - late night party people!

Thankfully DW had remained on the ball and a cab had been ordered home...Rebecca also came in the cab with us. As we arrived there was a knight in a shiny red porsche waiting to take her back to Wokingham...Mr Collins you're incredible and a true inspiration! : )

Heading into the house I realised it was Tamoxifen time...was it a good idea taking it on top of a 'good' amount of alcohol...I decided against it though worried what the impact might be...thankfully I was so tired that I didn't have too much time to think about this...zzzzzzzzzzz

Sunday 23rd November

Song of the day (LH): Easy - Lionel Richie
Song of the day (VW): The chain - Fleetwood Mac

Happy birthday Wonechen! xxx

OUCH!!! Those gin and tonics were definitely not a good idea......H2O, H2O! Paracetamol.....I nearly reached for the leftover domperidone from my chemo days as I think someone had mentioned it can help with hangovers....Finally a hangover from actually having been at a party rather than the chemical cocktails that I've been fed this year! Only one thing to watch while feeling pretty rough...the grand prix.

I managed to drag myself out of the house to buy food for dinner. Rachel and I had planned to go to yoga but I just knew it was not a good idea....though hats off to her as she made it!

Thankfully as the day progressed, I began to feel more and more human. DW annoyingly was as bright as a button! Still, as you know very few things get me out of making a Sunday night supper...so thankfully I had planned something easy to make and healthy to cleanse the body!

Photo no.785 - Bandari monkfish tail with Shirazi salad

Perhaps more of a summer dish but it was very welcome...accompanied by a glass of peach & lychee squash! ; )

At the beginning of October I shared the starting point of my hair growing journey...nearly 2 months on I thought I would share my progress.

Photo no.786 - slowly but surely...

As the title of this post suggests it feels like it's time to start closing my Wonderland journey....so at the end of this year I will be walking out of Wonderland...of course there will be a festive post or two...so it's not goodbye just yet! : ) xxx

A brave new world...week 3

Monday 10th November

Song of the day (LH): Never gonna let you down - Rick Astley
Song of the day (VW): Smooth operator

On a rainy Monday Lisbon morning there's only one thing to have for brunch....pancakes and a much needed detox juice!

Photo no.738 - detox juice...carrot, pear and celery

I'm not a huge fan of carrots or celery but this juice was really refreshing, something to try at home.

Photo no.739 - rainy Lisbon miradouro

Photo no.740 - I'm singing in the rain.....

Well...actually more like he's grumpy in the rain! We walked around as much as felt feasible in the rain. One thing on our hit list was to visit a tile factory in Principe Real. We took the metro, walked the streets to find it...only for it to be closed down...tripadvisor you failed us!!! More grumpiness...uh oh! Please come out sunshine!!! Despite it being so wet, it was really warm so at least it wasn't freezing and raining! Though the temperature seemed to be causing havoc with my internal temperature gauge as there were hot flushes a plenty. Right what else can we do in the dry....a cable car ride. Okey dok! A metro ride and a long walk along the Targus in the dark and sheet rain and we reached the cable car station...to find it had just closed!!! Today was definitely not going to plan. Only one thing to do...taxi! At least putting DW in front of the national geographic channel will cheer him up...result!!!

Dinner time...

Photo no.741 - that is the question! I decided to burger!

Tuesday 11th November

Song of the day (LH): Turn up the music - Chris Brown
Song of the day (VW): I will wait - Mumford & Sons

Road trip! We decided to hire a car and drive north to explore some of the coastline. First stop Obidos!

Obidos is a beautiful town, dominated by the castle and castle wall. Lit up at night, it's absolutely stunning. Thankfully the rain held off while we walked around...health and safety is slightly less rigorous in Portugal...we were able to walk on the castle wall without railings with some hefty drops beneath us...it seemed a good idea at the time...half way through my legs had gone to jelly. So only one thing to do...don't look down and pray that that it remains dry!!! Thankfully it did remain dry but all of a sudden the black clouds started to drop big fat raindrops....but the most beautiful rainbow appeared!

Photo no.742 - double rainbow!

Next stop on the road trip was Nazaré! The beach here is spectacular and despite it being really windy the sun and blue skies came out! Whoop, whoop!!!

Photo no.743 - mac and beach!

For the surfers out there, Nazaré is where some of the biggest waves in the world can be found. It's definitely not for beginners...so I decided to give it a miss! ; )

Photo no.744 - happy holidays!

From Nazaré you can take a funicular up to Sítio, a beautiful village on the top of the cliff overlooking the spectacular beach below. Although a modern train, it's probably the steepest funicular that I've travelled on in Portgual...another eyes closed moment!!!

Walking around Sítio we decided it was lunch time. Quite a few places were closed but then all of a sudden there was an amazing smell in the air...grilled sardines! How could we resist?! It turned out to be an amazing find as there were lots of locals in there having lunch and the Portuguese equivalent of the eponymous Italian mama was in charge of the grill!

Our last stop on today's tour was Foz de Arelho. We arrived just as the light was going but I have to say this is definitely somewhere I'd like to return to. The beach looked incredible and part of it is surrounded by a lagoon and the other part the Atlantic...next summer! It felt like a storm was breaking when we arrived so it was really spectacular. We took shelter in a local cafe and had a much needed pastel de nata!!!

Time to head back to the city! My chauffeur for the day was exhausted so some sofa time was needed before dinner.

The one thing I've noticed, is that I sense more people looking at me in my headscarves here. Perhaps it's in my mind and not theirs but I can't help but notice people looking at me more here than at home. The irony is that last time I was in Lisbon I was sick but looked well and now it's the opposite. Still as Ben's not on holiday with me to coiffeur my 'hair', my wig has to be reserved for dinner time's only!!!

Dinner time...pizza!

Photo no.746 - one of the best pizzarias in town!

The water was much needed as walking into this busy pizzaria it felt like being in furnace. In fact a lady on the table behind us fainted as it was so hot...it was my first experience of paramedics rushing into a pizza place! Thankfully we were by the window so it was quickly opened to get some cool air in. Despite all the drama it was a great pizza! I was sorely tempted to order the €55 pizza with truffles....but sense prevailed and I went for a standard pizza!

On the short walk home, the heavens opened once more...I decided to go into a full rendition of 'Singing in the rain' complete with some twirls much to DW's annoyance!!! It felt like being on a movie set...well in my merry mind it did!!! : )

Sunshine!!!! Oh yeah!!!

The day took the train...oh oh la la! From Lisbon you can take a train ride along the coast to Cascais and Estoril. The view from the train is breathtaking especially on a sunny day! We decided to hop off in Cascais and work our way back to Estoril.

It was so good to be walking in sunshine with the sound of the waves and smell of salt in the air...sunshine please stay!!!

Cascais offers a Boris-bike like system where you can borrow bikes for a day. They're not the finest mountain bikes available but they work...though my seat kept spinning around which proved tricky at times. There's a designated cycle route which surrounds you with the spectacular coastline and a nature reserve with hills the background...pretty darn nice! The waves here were utterly breathtaking and the setting was unbelievable.

After a couple of hours of cycling, we dropped the bikes back and took a stroll along the seafront to Estoril. It was stunning to walk along in the late afternoon sunshine, with the waves rolling in and out...

As the sun was setting we noticed some surfers heading out into the waves...the water here is not the warmest even in summer, so huge respect to them! I'm sure it's exhilarating but perhaps I'll give it a miss today!

Arriving back in Lisbon high on vitamin D, we headed to the mercado da Ribiera for a late lunch. This is a Lisbon must. It's relatively new and basically lots of the city's best chef's and food shops have outlets here that you can sample from breakfast to midnight snacks and later...Adjacent to this addition is the original food market where locals come for fruit and veg, fish, meat...basically what I'm saying is that from dawn to dusk this is foodie heaven!

I've been avoiding processed meats....chorizo, salami, ham....but this afternoon I cracked when a plate of some beautifully cured Spanish hams was on offer from this classic Lisbon charcuterie. It was complete with a glass of Super Bock....

Photo no.758 - charcuterie heaven!

Feeling refuelled I also grabbed a cheeky pastel de nata to have back at the hotel...a good food afternoon!

Dinner this evening was a bit of a mistake....we were both tired from a busy day so had little energy to choose where to go for dinner. After walking around for a bit we settled on a Mexican restaurant....because Lisbon is renowned for its Mexican food.....! This was a case of just needing to eat rather than savouring dinner. Still overall today was pretty wonderful, so you can't have everything!

Despite being away, I still have the daily feeling of getting used to how my new boob feels like. Over the past few days it feels like it is getting a bit harder/ tighter. I know this is perfectly normal for it to change while it settles but I guess it's just a daily reminder...my other scars seem to have blended into being part of me, so much so that I barely clock them now...but my new boob is a constant reminder of this year...I'm sure once it's settled I'll soon forget but for now it's there.

Thursday 13th November

Song of the day (LH): Beat it - Michael Jackson
Song of the day (VW): Sadness Part I - Enigma

Rain, rain go away, come back next week when we're not here! Oh no, you've decided today you want to royally pee it down...

After walking for 15 minutes my boots were completely drenched. Knowing this was likely to happen I handily had taken a spare of socks with me so that I could buy some wellies and have dry feet once more! Some some very Euro-chic ankle wellies were purchased for the princely sum of €12. Dry feet at last!

Another must do in Lisbon is to have a pastel de bata from the Pastéis de Belém. On a rainy day the other plus about going here is taking a tram ride as its about a 15 minute ride from the city centre. Once in Belém the other must is seeing the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a 15th century monastery. DW and I aren't big museum fans, as we prefer to walk around the city and soak up the atmosphere and architecture...however, when the rain gods conspire against you things have to change...so a visit inside the monastery was needed!

A rare dry spell meant that we could do some open air walking. The buildings in Lisbon are so beautiful. Traditionally they were often covered in tiles, some of which can still be seen though I suspect this may dwindle over time due to the cost of keeping them. Here are a few examples...

On the very wet walk back from the tram stop I saw this in the window of a cafe....it made me stop and smile! : )

DW went back to the hotel but as it had stopped raining I decided to explore a bit more. ie. wanted to go shopping for a bit! I find Lisbon such a friendly city so it was lovely exploring  a few shops and chatting to people as I went. Then the inevitable happened and the heavens opened up, it felt like a bath being emptied rather than a shower. I got back to the hotel and didn't know what buzzer to press for our apartment, so had to go into  reception. The receptionist said he'd let me in which meant going back outside...in the time it took him to open the door, my jeans became wringing wet...I was so wet all I could do was laugh and take a hot shower! Sometimes things like this can make you feel  very alive!

Our last night dinner in Lisbon was planned at Clube de Journalistas, another February revisit as it had been so good. Again they served each of our menu selections to share so that we ended up having a foodie extravaganza....here goes!

Photo no.764 - mackerel ceviche with spicy popcorn and mango vinaigrette

Photo no.765 - beef carpaccio...one of the few and the best that I've tasted

Photo no.766 - roasted octopus with sweet potato mash and spring onions

Photo no.767 - coconut seafood risotto...I'm sure it has a far more glamorous name than this!!!

Photo no.768 - Sweet things....a lot of sweet things!!!

It wasn't quite as magical as the dinner we had back in February but I'd still put it on a recommended restaurant list of Lisbon.

After dinner it was dry so we walked back to Chiado...on the way back we walked past the Mercado da Ribiera....it's our last night here...a cheeky last glass of moscatel...why not!

This evening was excessive, for me, on all accounts...that last glass of moscatel was definitely one too many but for whatever reason it felt good to be 'normal' once more and forget everything for a few hours. Lisbon you've been amazing in breaking my food paranoia and not feeling guilty for every morsel that's not healthy going into my mouth. Thank you!xxx

Ouch....water and paracetamol required! What do you mean I've got to pack...eurgh....this is going to go very slowly....The good news was that the sun was starting to appear unexpectedly through the clouds. Maybe we were going to have a good day afterall!

Finally we left the hotel at 12.30 in search of some brunch....I was hungry like the wolf!

Photo no.774 - obligatory Lisbon tram photo!

We were convinced that today would be a rainy day, so before brunch we went and booked an Ecotour! It's a great way to see the city (under cover!) via a guided GPS system and was really fun to drive an electric car. It was a bit cramped for the person in the back...as in legs had to straddle the driver but I would really recommend this to anyone.

Photo no.777 - driving the Twizzy around the praça de comércio!

Much to DW's fear factor, I went off piste from the tour and decided to drive around Alfama..for those of you who don't know Lisbon its streets are extremely steep, so it was 'interesting' trying to control the Twizzy! Still it was bucket loads of fun!

Photo no.778 - inside the mobile!

Opposite the Ecotours base a shop selling men's shoes called The Lisbon Walker. Just as the weather had cheered up, so had DW's mood, so we went into to have a look. This store is a great concept...for every pair of shoes bought, you receive a free bottle of wine...perhaps a gimmick but Portuguese wine is good so what's not to like! The shoes are well crafted and a good price so DW ended up buying 2 pairs...mmn this should be interesting to pack! They're shortly about to start an online store, so worth checking out at some point - http://www.thelisbonwalker.com

Our Lisbon time was running out....so there was only one thing to do!

Photo no.779 - a final cheeky pastel de nata!

We were so grateful that the weather had cheered up, as it made our last day much more fun than anticipated. Dry would have been a bonus, but sunshine was a double bonus! Even the Lisbon lover in me's spirit had been dampened by the torrential rain. But with the sun shining my Lisbon love was reignited and I'll be back next year for a summer visit! There is something infectious about Lisbon...the genial locals who aren't looking to rip you off as is often the case with many tourist locations, the stunning architecture, the music and the vibrancy of the city...a great place to escape to. Go, go, go...but probably outside of the rainy season! ; ) Graças Lisboa!!!

Yoga Sunday....though part of me wanted to stay in bed...thanks for chauffeuring Rachel! I could tell that I was really tired as my balance was completely off, which is not so helpful for certain positions. Still good to take the time out and listen to Davinder's soothing voice for a couple of hours.

Arriving home I nestled into the sofa...I felt terrible. Raging headache, stomach cramps and topped with feeling sick...mmn what is this? This isn't the best afternoon! I know the morning's session is meant to be a detox but I shouldn't feel this bad. The thought of making 'the' Sunday night dinner was too much...Eventually I lured myself from the sofa and enlisting DW's help cracked on with dinner...et voila!

Photo no.780 - Bill's Everyday Asian glazed salmon with Dhruv Baker's Thai salad

About an hour prior to making this it was making me feel worse...fish and queasiness don't mix in my experience...but once made it was actually really good and the salad felt quite cleansing. Dhruv serves this with veal but it works as an accompaniment to most meats/ fish..give it a go! Go on, go on, go on!

Even though I managed to eat this I was still not feeling tip top...stomach cramps, bad headache and elevated temperature meant the little what if monkey was starting to pop into my head...lets get some sleep and hopefully things will be better in the morning...as Elton once sang.."I'm still standing"...so keep going VW...everything will be 'A' ok!
